Bridging the Divide: Theory Meets Practice

Published annually, Potentia: Journal of International and Public Affairs, the Centre for International Policy Studies’ (CIPS) graduate student journal showcases the policy-relevant research of graduate students from across Canada and abroad.  It provides a space for the rigorous analysis of contemporary international challenges and discussion of possible policy alternatives.

This year’s edition seeks to bridge the divide between the theory and practice of international and public affairs. We are particularly interested in concrete and substantive examples, which probe areas where the connection between theory and practice has been especially fruitful.  We are seeking submissions on a wide range of issues that examine the relationship between academic research or ideas on one hand and foreign or international policy on the other, including, but not limited to:

  • Governance: the UN and IOs, international development, the environment, non-proliferation issues;
  • Transnational threats: terrorism, trafficking, border security, cyber threats;
  • Peace operations: humanitarianism, peacekeeping, peace-building, post-conflict reconstruction;
  • International political economy: trade and financial institutions, the global financial crisis;
  • Rising and resurgent powers: regionalism, China and India, G20 countries;
  • International law: international human rights, transitional justice;
  • International relations theory: conventional and alternative theories of international order;
  • Canada and the world: foreign policy decision-making, the War on Terror, Haiti, Canadian public affairs.

In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the discipline, we encourage the submission of papers from a wide range of disciplines in either English or French, including, but not limited to: Business, Criminology, Economics, Geography, History, Law, Political Science, Sociology, and Women’s Studies. Master’s, PhD, and law students are all encouraged to apply.

Three types of submissions will be accepted:

  • research articles (should not exceed 8000 words);
  • policy briefs (should not exceed 1200 words);
  • book reviews from the list of books for review provided (should not exceed 600 words).

All articles will be peer-reviewed.

Submissions must strictly follow MLA format (for questions, refer to the following link: www.sass.uottawa.ca/writing/kit/reference-mla.php). Submissions that do not respect the above guidelines regarding citation and length will not be considered for review and/or publication.

The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2012. Only one submission per author will be accepted. Research articles and policy briefs must be accompanied by an abstract (200 words) and biography (100 words). Please note that the deadline is firm and late papers will NOT be accepted.

Please e-mail papers to the editors-in-chief Susan Khazaeli and Adam Kochanski at potentia@uottawa.ca.
