CIPS is delighted to announce the launch of the Security Studies Network (SSN), the creation of which reflects the great strength of the University of Ottawa as a centre for the study of national and international security. The SSN – jointly coordinated by Michael Williams, Mark Salter and myself – will provide a “common home” for researchers working on a wide range of security issues, including those doing theoretical or policy-oriented work. We also hope that the SSN will serve as a focal point for collaboration with researchers and policy analysts outside the University of Ottawa who share an interest in the study of international or national security.

To mark the inauguration of the Security Studies Network, CIPS will host a presentation by Professor Peter J. Katzenstein of Cornell University, titled “Beyond the West: Civilizations in World Politics.” The talk will take place on February 2 from 12:00–1:30 p.m. in Room 3120 of the Desmarais Building, 55 Laurier Ave. E. A light lunch will be provided at the talk.

Professor Katzenstein’s research and teaching lie at the intersection of the fields of international relations and comparative politics. His work addresses issues of political economy, security and culture in world politics. His current research focuses on the politics of civilizational states; public diplomacy, law, religion and popular culture; the role of anti-imperial sentiments including anti-Americanism; and regionalism in world politics.

More information about the SSN and its activities will be circulated soon and posted on the CIPS website, so please stay tuned!
